Established in 2014, Friends of TLI supports the mission and vision of the Teaching and Learning Institute. The foundation is made up of community leaders, teachers, parents and students who are committed to working together and advocating, through the principles of the institute, to ensure its success and growth.
The Teaching and Learning Institute was created by a Ford Foundation Grant in order to help the RCSD grow its own teachers. Since its inception in 1995, the TLI program has graduated 172 students. Currently, there are 10 TLI graduates working in the Rochester City School District while many others are teaching in various areas of the United States. Other graduates of the program have gone on to medical school, law school, and the field of business. These students have commented on the fact that though they did not pursue teaching, the TLI program helped them develop leadership and citizenship skills that are beneficial in any career.
